You have many choices when it comes a broken tooth or replacement for lost teeth. Crowns, bridges, implants, or partials are procedures which esthetically replace broken or missing teeth.

A crown is a strong durable laboratory prepared replacement for your existing tooth. It is often a treatment plan for a severe fracture or after you have lost a large filling. Crowns are a two appointment procedure. During the first appointment your tooth is prepared (figure 1) and a temporary tooth is made and put into place while the lab finished the case. For the second appointment, we seat the crown to check the fit and the bite (figure 2). Once correctly adjusted we cement the crown into place (figure3).

Bridges
A bridge is procedure that replaces one or more missing teeth. By placing a bridge, it will make it easier for you to chew, may improve you smile, and it will keep your teeth, gums, and jaw healthy.

You want to fill a gap (figure 4) caused by a missing tooth because they can cause numerous oral problems.

Problems that can arise if you don't fill the gap:
  • Adjacent teeth shift toward the void resulting in bite problems.
  • Your jaw can become sore because of your new bite.
  • Changes in your smile due to teeth shifting.
  • Difficulty in keeping your mouth clean may result in decay.

A bridge is an easy way to avoid the problems stated above. A fixed bridge is one or more replacement teeth attached to the natural teeth next to them (figure 5).

Partials
A partial denture is recommended if you don't have enough support for a fixed bridge. It help prolong the life of your remaining teeth. It is a removable device made up of porcelain or plastic replacement teeth. Gum colored plastic attaches to metal frame work which attaches to your existing teeth (figure 6).

Please contact Dr. Bertagni if your partial becomes loose or begins to cause sores.
