Why Are My Teeth Sensitive?

Teeth can become sensitive for many reasons. In most cases it is because the anatomy of your teeth has changed. Teeth often become sensitive when your dentin is exposed. The dentin is usually covered by a hard outer coating call enamel. When this outer layer becomes worn away or if your gums recede exposing your tooth's dentin, you will feel sensitivity in your tooth. This sensitivity is a result of the dentin being connected to your tooth's nerve. Exposed dentin can trigger sensitivity when it comes in contact with:

  • Hot or cold food or drink
  • Acidic food and drink
  • Sweets
  • Grinding of teeth can also cause sensitivity

High sensitivity can be caused by improper brushing, high acidity levels in the mouth, or decayed teeth.
