Our Wisdom teeth are the last teeth that emerge in our mouths. We begin to sign of our 3rd molars in the late teens or early twenties. In some cases they do not come in at all or are not present.

Wisdom teeth are a valuable asset to the mouth when they are healthy and properly positioned. Often, however, problems develop that require their removal.

Wisdom teeth are the least needed teeth in the mouth. When the jaw isn't large enough to accommodate wisdom teeth, they can become impacted (lodged beneath existing teeth in the jaw). Wisdom teeth may grow sideways, emerge only part way from the gum or remain trapped beneath the gum and bone.

Extraction of wisdom teeth is generally recommended when:

  • Wisdom teeth only partially come in (erupt). This leaves an opening for bacteria to enter around the tooth and cause an infection. pain, swelling, jaw stiffness, and general illness can result.
  • There is a chance that poorly aligned wisdom teeth will damage adjacent teeth -- causing crowding problems in the mouth.
  • A cyst (fluid-filled sac) forms, destroying surrounding structures (bone or tooth roots).

Please ask the us about the health and positioning of your wisdom teeth. We will monitor your wisdom teeth through panoramic x-rays. These x-rays give us a full mouth detail of your teeth and jaw. After this examination we may make a recommendation for removal and refer you to an oral surgeon for further evaluation.
